- Get Certified
A certified practitioner must first certify the patient.
- Login to NY.gov
Patients need to sign in to My.NY.gov after they are certified. Patients without an account must first create a personal ID by clicking the “Don’t have an Account?” option. - Find the Medical Marijuana Data Management System
To register, click the “Medical Marijuana Data Management System” link after selecting the “Health Applications” button. To obtain comprehensive guidelines on how to register as a patient or caregiver, navigate to the Medical Marijuana Data Management System and click on the “Help” link.
During the application procedure, patients will need to present documentation of their identity and place of residence.
A $50 application fee is required under the Compassionate Care Act; however, the Department is presently eliminating this price for all patients and their designated caregivers.
- Designate Caregivers
Patients may name up to two caregivers at the time of registration. Once the patient’s registration has been processed, the designated caregiver(s) must then use the online system mentioned in number 2 above to register with the Department.
- Registration Approval
After approval of registration, the Department will provide a temporary registry identification card via the My.NY.gov account. This card can be used to purchase authorized medical marijuana products while the patient or caregiver waits for the registry identification card (ID card) to arrive in the mail. After the practitioner’s certification expires, registrations become invalid. Every time a new certification number is issued, patients and caregivers are required to re-register.
- Getting Your ID Card
To obtain authorized medical marijuana products, patients must visit a registered organization’s dispensing location with their registry ID cards and certifications. When purchasing medical marijuana for their patients, designated caregivers are required to bring both the patients’ certifications and their caregiver registry identity cards to the dispensing facility.
Why Should You Get a Medical Marijuana Card
Using a medical marijuana card to purchase cannabis products for the treatment of various medical illnesses, including pain management, is less expensive than purchasing the same cannabis products for recreational use.
Additional Crucial Registration Details:
- Whenever certified patients or designated caregivers possess authorized medical marijuana products, they are required to carry their registry ID card at all times.
- It is not permitted to transfer medical marijuana products outside of New York State.
- Certifications or registry ID cards from other states are not accepted in New York State.
- Once a certified patient or designated caregiver receives a registry ID card, they have ten (10) business days to notify the Medical Marijuana Program of any changes to their name, address, or if they no longer have the serious condition listed on the card.
